How to show up in the Google Maps top 3 in Baltimore
Google ranks map results on relevance, distance and prominence, and nobody can pay to move up. You control your primary category, an accurate address or service area, a complete Business Profile, a steady flow of recent reviews and a website page for each service. Distance from the searcher shapes everything else.
- Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and it says there is no way to pay for a better position.
- Experts rate your primary Business Profile category as the single most important factor you control.
- Baltimore City and Baltimore County are separate jurisdictions, and where your address sits affects which searches you appear for.
- Keyword stuffing, oversized service areas and AI-generated photos are rated as risks, not shortcuts.
How Google decides who appears in the map results
Google chooses map results by weighing relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, distance is how far you are from the searcher or the area they named, and prominence is how well known and well reviewed your business is.
Google’s own guidance, quoted in full by SEO Inc from its Business Profile help page, also says “there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking”, that review count and score are factored in, and that your position in regular web results is a factor too. That last point is why your website matters for the map results, not only your profile.
The ranking factors that matter most
Your primary category, your distance from the searcher and your business name carry the most weight, followed by opening hours and reviews. These rankings come from Whitespark’s 2026 survey of 47 local search experts, the most widely referenced study of local ranking factors.
| Rank | Factor | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Primary Business Profile category | Choose the category that matches your most profitable service |
| 2 | Distance from the searcher | Nothing directly, but service pages help for named areas |
| 3 | Keywords in the business name | Use your real, registered name; adding keywords breaks Google’s rules |
| 4 | Physical address in the city searched | Keep your address accurate and consistent everywhere |
| 5 | Open at the time of the search | Keep hours current, including holidays |
| 6 | High Google rating | Do good work and ask every customer for a review |
| 8 | Additional categories | Add secondary categories for other real services |
| 9 | Number of Google reviews with text | Ask for reviews after every job |
| 11 | Recency of reviews | Keep a steady weekly flow |
Reviews appear several times on that list, which is why a steady review routine is usually the most effective change a business can make.
What a Baltimore address means for your rankings
Baltimore City and Baltimore County are separate jurisdictions, so a business in Towson or Dundalk sits outside the city that searchers often name. Because distance and having an address in the searched city both rank highly, where your address sits shapes which searches you can realistically win.
The city separated from Baltimore County in 1851 and has functioned as its own county-level jurisdiction since, while the county seat is Towson. Census estimates put Baltimore city at about 570,000 people and Baltimore County at about 848,000, with large suburbs such as Dundalk, Towson, Catonsville and Owings Mills each home to tens of thousands of residents.
Our reading of the factors above: a business with a Towson address will usually find it easier to rank for “[service] Towson” and nearby searches than for searches made in Fells Point or Canton. Separate website pages for each area you serve are the honest way to compete further out, and Google removes profiles built on fake or virtual offices.
Service-area businesses: address, radius and risks
If you travel to customers and don’t serve them at your address, set up your profile as a service-area business, hide the street address and keep your service area realistic. Experts in the Whitespark survey rated showing an address on a service-area profile and setting a service area larger than two hours’ drive among the factors most likely to hurt rankings or trigger suspension.
The same survey flags keyword stuffing in the business description and AI-generated photos or videos as risks. Google also removes fake profiles in volume: it took down more than 13 million fake Business Profiles in 2025.
A step-by-step checklist
Work through these in order. Each step builds on the one before, starting with the factors that carry the most weight.
- Set the primary category to the service you most want to be found for, then add real secondary categories.
- Confirm your name, address or service area, phone and hours match your website and the major directories exactly.
- Check your map pin sits on your actual location.
- Fill in services, a plain-language description and real photos of your team and work.
- Build a website page for each main service, and for each area you serve, linked from your profile where it fits.
- Ask every customer for a review and reply to every review.
- Post updates and keep hours current, including holidays.
- Check your rankings from several points across your area each month, since results change block by block.
What this looks like in practice
A profile-linked service page, steady reviews and well-chosen “near me” terms can change map visibility sharply. In one published case study, Sterling Sky reports a garage door company’s unbranded clicks rose almost 1,000% year over year after this kind of work.
Our own published results include a Texas roofing contractor that reached page one in three months and a dental clinic that doubled its organic traffic. In the Local Leader Program, Google Business Profile fixes go live within the first 14 days, and the free pipeline audit shows how you currently rank against your top competitors.
